Mental Health Worker

About This Role

The Mental Health Worker (MHW) assists licensed nurses in providing direct patient care within a mental healthcare setting, primarily serving mentally ill adult patients in the ER Unit. This role involves basic nursing functions, patient monitoring, and ensuring a safe environment under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities

• Assist licensed nurses in providing patient care in a mental healthcare setting
• Communicate changes in patient's clinical condition, including vital signs and behavioral symptoms, to appropriate staff
• Perform basic nursing functions under the direction of the Charge Nurse
• Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), nutritional support, rounding, and monitoring patient vital signs/pain
• Ambulate, transfer, and transport patients
• Observe and report patient behaviors, ensuring safety, security, and monitoring for contraband
• Assure that patient/family rights are respected and maintained
• Participate in quality and process improvement processes within the department

Requirements

• Ability to perform routine patient-care activities
• Physical strength to assist patients in ambulating, turning, and transferring
• Good communication skills; ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
• Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations
• Ability to understand and use medical terminology

Nice to Have

• Six months experience as a Mental Health Worker, Certified Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Technician, Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic
• Minimum of six months adult Behavioral Health, Acute Care, Long Term or sub-acute direct patient care experience within the last two years
• Minimum of six months experience providing direct care, monitoring, and/or evaluation of individuals diagnosed with mental illness/disability or a medical condition
