Mental Health Tech - Behavioral Center (Childrens Unit)

About This Role

The Mental Health Technician (MHT) provides select patient care activities within a Children's Unit of a behavioral health center, focusing on maintaining patient safety, supporting therapeutic treatment plans, and documenting observations for the interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

• Perform select patient care activities as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team
• Maintain safety and structure of the milieu
• Observe and record patient information pertinent to the treatment plan
• Report patient information to the unit charge nurse and team members
• Verbally and physically assist patients with everyday activities and emergency situations, including physical holds on aggressive patients
• Provide education to patients in groups and individually as delegated by the unit charge nurse
• Model positive social and coping skills
• Document patient behaviors accurately on rounding sheets and in Meditech
• Communicate symptoms and changes in patient's condition to RN and co-workers
• Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to implement patient care plans
• Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet, sleep, and physical activity
• Assist patients with comfort measures, bathing, hygiene, meals, skin care, and other basic care needs
• Prepare patients for and assist with searches, examinations, and treatments
• Use verbal de-escalation techniques and apply physical intervention techniques as a last resort
• Provide educational and leisure activities and groups to patients
• Ensure patient safety and properly implement behavioral medical emergency protocols

Requirements

• Must be over 21
• Ability to pass an Oklahoma DHS background check
• Capable of verbally and physically assisting patients and applying physical holds on aggressive patients
• Current BLS within first week of hire
• First Aid within 30 days of hire
• MAB (Managing Aggressive Behavior) within 30 days of hire

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent; college coursework or degree preferred. A bachelor’s degree in Psychology or Sociology will be recognized as 4 years’ experience
• Entry-level position; previous Behavioral Health experience preferred.
