Perform inspection work to ensure compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems codes for residential and commercial constructions. This role involves working independently in the field, interacting with contractors and property owners, and maintaining inspection records.
Responsibilities
- Inspect buildings during and after construction, including footings, structural framing, design, materials, and workmanship, to determine compliance with building and land use law.
- Review plans and specifications for compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, heating, and zoning public safety laws.
- Inspect new and existing wiring and electrical installations in residences and businesses for conformance with safety standards, codes, and ordinances.
- Issue electrical inspection certificates for approved installations.
- Inspect heating and plumbing installations and fixtures on new or remodeled construction sites, examining for workmanship and proper use of materials.
- Discuss conditions found with owners or builders, explaining the importance of voluntary adjustments.
- Conduct follow-up inspections and recommend formal actions for non-compliance when necessary.
- Advise plumbers, contractors, and others regarding county plumbing and heating regulations and codes.
- Maintain records of inspections and prepare related reports.
Requirements
- Considerable knowledge of methods and procedures involved in the installation and maintenance of plumbing, heating, cooling systems or electrical wiring
- Considerable knowledge of modern building construction practices, methods, and materials
- Considerable knowledge of federal, state, and local codes and regulations pertaining to building, electrical, and plumbing and heating inspections
- Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship in electrical and plumbing and heating systems and in building construction
- Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications
- Ability to express code requirements clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
- Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with contractors, property owners and the public
Qualifications
- High school or GED equivalency
- 5+ years of experience in at least one of the specified building trades (building, electrical, plumbing, gas, and heating) areas, including at least five years of inspections experience.
