About This Role

Manage the general maintenance, service, and FRA inspections for all locomotives and equipment to ensure safety and quality standards. This role involves supervising shop mechanics and collaborating with the Operations team.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate activities of workers engaged in repair and maintenance of railroad locomotives
  • Assign duties to workers based on abilities and nature of required repairs
  • Observe work progress to ensure adherence to prescribed procedures and company/governmental standards
  • Direct workers to perform preventive maintenance of locomotive components
  • Monitor stock of replacement parts and requisition needed items
  • Examine shop equipment to verify safety and performance standards
  • Patrol work sites to observe methods, inspect safety equipment, and ensure compliance with regulations
  • Implement and schedule all FRA Locomotive inspections
  • Manage locomotive operations including shop, terminal, and service tracks
  • Monitor safety, quality and production performance in shop, terminal and service track
  • Track and maintain locomotive downtime with written reports
  • Work with the Operations team to develop plans to ensure operational needs are met
  • Routinely audit locomotive reports and inspect equipment to ensure compliance
  • Assist in troubleshooting and repairing locomotives and equipment as needed
  • Coach and train mechanical employees on safe and productive work
  • Maintain shop expense budget along with yearly capital request

Requirements

  • 3-7 years of experience as locomotive, diesel, automotive or aircraft mechanic
  • Technical Certifications (if applicable)
  • Mechanical Aptitude, must understand and apply mechanical principles
  • Knowledge of locomotive components
  • Knowledge of Locomotive diesel engine components
  • Knowledge of power and hydraulic systems
  • Welding and oxygen/acetylene torching skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and federal and state regulations
  • Knowledge of federal railroad regulations
  • Ability to read and understand service and parts manuals
  • Prior shop management experience
  • Safe driving record

Qualifications

  • 3-7 years of experience as locomotive, diesel, automotive or aircraft mechanic or Technical Certifications required, plus prior shop management experience.
