About This Role

Accurately collect specimens from patients with a sense of urgency, communicate effectively with nursing staff, collaborate with laboratory staff and leadership, and assist in training new team members, while also performing clerical and miscellaneous duties.

Responsibilities

  • Follow proper patient identification protocols and established blood collection protocols
  • Utilize straight needle during most venipunctures performed and be fully competent in order of draw
  • Check tubes at time of collection for expiration dates and demonstrate a high level of skill resulting in minimal unsuccessful draws or recollects
  • Understand special collection techniques including ice, foil wrap, special tubes, and trace metals
  • Follow proper collection protocol for blood cultures with minimal contamination
  • Provide support for all departments in obtaining prior unsuccessful collections
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance or safety checks as assigned
  • Perform full range of duties required for inpatient phlebotomy, including basic pre-analytic processing functions such as centrifuging or aliquoting samples as needed
  • Prioritize workload between routine, stat, and timed draws
  • Answer department phone(s) promptly and courteously, identifying self to caller
  • Complete all required training by assigned due date and effectively utilize computer systems to look up patients and check order and draw status
  • Perform training and provide feedback for new hires and assist co-workers in problem resolution

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Completion of formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent
  • Ability to read and comprehend written information
  • Ability to effectively perform a variety of job duties in a stressful, fast paced environment
  • Phlebotomy skills
  • Ability to work while standing, bending or walking while pushing a cart for entire shift
  • Superior time management, planning, and organization skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills to support quality decision-making
  • Working knowledge of basic computer applications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; completion of formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent is required
  • At least one year of phlebotomy experience in a fast paced environment preferred

  • Keyboarding skills

Certifications

Phlebotomy certification (Required)
