Fire Marshal

About This Role

Serve as the Fire Marshal for the City of Bloomington, responsible for fire safety inspections, building plan review, and coordination of fire investigations and enforcement. Provide technical expertise in fire code interpretation and maintain cooperative relationships with various agencies and the public.

Responsibilities

• Perform building and site plan review for all new construction
• Prepare written fire code requirements and conduct final occupancy inspections
• Perform yearly inspections and re-inspections for childcare homes and centers
• Coordinate the fire inspection program, including scheduling and training
• Conduct meetings with contractors, architects, owners, and other agencies regarding construction projects
• Perform code interpretation and enforcement guidelines to department personnel, citizens, and professional agencies
• Coordinate fire investigations to determine cause and origin
• Coordinate with the Office of the State Fire Marshal regarding fire arson investigations and Code adoption/enforcement
• Assist in the development and administration of the division budget
• Assist in the administration of the City of Bloomington Unsafe Building law

Requirements

• Minimum two years as a full-time Fire or Building Inspector
• High school diploma or equivalent
• State certification as a firefighter first class or equivalent
• State certification in fire prevention/inspector or equivalent
• State certification in fire/arson investigation or equivalent
• Possession of a valid Indiana Motor Vehicle Operators License

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum two years as a full-time Fire or Building Inspector with state, local, or federal fire or building service organization
