This Electrical Engineer role involves system planning for electric distribution, providing technical support for operations systems, and designing and implementing smart grid solutions. The engineer will also be responsible for maintaining SELCO standards, assisting with substation technical tasks, and leading capital improvement projects.
Responsibilities
- Perform system planning for electric distribution
- Provide technical support for OMS, SCADA, and GIS programs
- Review and develop electric distribution configuration recommendations for efficiency and improvements
- Design and implement smart grid and microgrids
- Create, review, validate, and update data for system models
- Perform system feeder analysis, contingency studies, coordination studies, and load forecasting
- Review, update, and create substation electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, and three-line diagrams
- Assist substation technical staff with testing and troubleshooting of substation equipment
- Make recommendations for substation equipment upgrades and create associated wiring schematics
- Develop, review, and implement electric system switching procedures
- Calculate reliability indices, participate in benchmarking programs, and recommend improvements
- Serve as project engineer or project manager on major Capital Improvement projects
- Act as technical resource expert in engineering matters and assist in Capital Improvement Plan and budget development
- Analyze distribution system behavior to identify and correct abnormal operations
- Support field and substation switching activities
- Assist with the design, maintenance, and operation of SELCO's fiber-optic and communication networks
- Provide support for integration between various CIS, GIS, OMS, SCADA, and other systems
- Train and support field personnel on technologies being deployed
- Maintain current knowledge of meters, smart grid technologies, substation controls, and digital/mechanical systems
- Be available "on call" as part of supervisory rotation and provide after-hours support
- Supervise electric linemen, substation switchmen, contractors, and consultants
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree
- 2+ years of relevant experience in electric utility or consulting design engineering
- Experience with National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and construction standards
- Experience using CAD tools (preferably Autodesk products)
- Experience with system modeling software such as Milsoft
- Experience with projects in distribution design: medium voltage switchgear, voltage conversion, distribution automation
- Experience with development of civil & electrical packages for cable/conduit in dense urban environments
- Experience with SCADA
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in written reports
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
- 2+ years of prior relevant experience (working directly with an electric utility or electric utility consulting company, performing design engineering)
