This role involves performing essential duties for the operation of a conventional water treatment plant and water distribution system, ensuring customers receive high-quality drinking water at adequate pressure. It is an entry-level training position focused on learning plant operations, maintenance, and repair functions.
Responsibilities
- Operate the water treatment plant including related subsystems and instrumentation
- Monitor the treatment process from the control board/computer screen, including various treatment processes
- Monitor water quality by performing laboratory tests at various stages and calibrate laboratory equipment
- Determine chemical dosage and make adjustments to plant processes as necessary
- Read gauges and meters, interpret data to maintain proper treatment and distribution operations
- Operate pumps and valves utilizing a SCADA system
- Monitor systems for alarms, make adjustments, and notify appropriate personnel for problems
- Operate mechanical equipment, hand and power tools, and a light truck related to plant operations
- Operate chlorination equipment and perform maintenance on the chlorine system
- Maintain operational logs and records, and perform visual inspections for security
- Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on treatment plant equipment and assist with repairs
- Operate the City’s water production and distribution system, ensuring availability and pressure
- Respond to inquiries from the public and direct them to appropriate staff members
- Assist in basic training aspects for new operators
Requirements
- Ability to obtain Class "D" Water Operator certification from TCEQ within one year of employment
- Ability to comprehend basic operations, services, and activities of a water treatment system
- Knowledge of principles, practices, materials, chemicals, and operating procedures for water treatment plant operation and maintenance
- Ability to operate and maintain various water treatment plant equipment, facilities, and systems
- Ability to perform basic inspections and preventive maintenance
- Ability to read and interpret gauges, meters, and instrument readings
- Ability to diagnose simple operational problems and perform effective maintenance
- Ability to monitor and adjust plant processes, collect water samples, and conduct laboratory tests
- Ability to compile and record complex data and maintain accurate logs
- Ability to complete emergency response training
Qualifications
- Entry level training position in Water Treatment Plant Operator series with minimal or general skills in plant operations, mechanical repair, and maintenance.
