Clinical Assistant

About This Role

This Clinical Assistant role involves escorting patients, taking medical histories, assisting with office procedures, and scheduling surgeries. The position is essential in supporting the Ophthalmologist and ensuring efficient patient care.

Responsibilities

• Escort patients to examine rooms, take detailed medical histories, and determine the reason for the visit
• Check patient’s pupils, muscle, visual acuity, extraocular movements, and measure blood pressure when indicated
• Present patient history summary and alert Ophthalmologist to changes in visual acuity, elevated extraocular pressure, or blood pressure
• Annotate patient charts with exam and treatment results
• Assist with office procedures including RK surgery, chalazion excision and tear duct probes
• Schedule surgeries, call surgical center, verify times with patients, and prepare charts, pre-admission, and consent forms
• Schedule patients with other doctors for consultation as required
• Counsel patients in the office and on the phone concerning physician's orders, use of drops, contact lenses, drugs, and answer questions concerning surgery
• Order contact lenses, write prescriptions, and approve drug refills under physician's instructions
• Maintain knowledge of ICD-9 diagnostic coding and CPT procedural codes and third-party reimbursement billing requirements
• Maintain knowledge of operation and maintenance of clinical equipment, drugs, and supplies
