About This Role

Assist students with disabilities and other passengers during bus transportation, ensuring their safety, well-being, and adherence to rules. This role involves providing physical assistance, managing behavior, and handling emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with disabilities and other passengers in loading and unloading from buses safely during normal transport and emergency situations
  • Provide behavior support for student bus passengers
  • Clean up after students as needed
  • Support proper bus behavior and emergency procedures to enforce rules/regulations and maintain student safety
  • Assist students in wheelchairs by loading and securing chairs before departure
  • Assist Bus Driver to ensure students are safely fastened into their seats, securing seat belts, harnesses, tie downs, and various adaptive and assistive devices
  • De-escalate aggressive student behavior
  • Maintain routine records and reports related to student behavior and assigned activities (e.g., incident reports, passenger misconduct)
  • Monitor students with disabilities until released to teacher, instructional assistant, or parent, providing necessary physical assistance, dialogue, and reassurance
  • Determine appropriate action in potential or real medical emergencies according to established guidelines and administer first aid to passengers as needed
  • Facilitate activities on assigned bus (e.g., games, book reading, group conversation) to support positive student behavior and learning

Requirements

  • Ability to adhere to safety practices
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records
  • Skill in operating equipment used in transporting special needs students
  • Ability to administer first aid when required
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
  • Understanding of age-appropriate activities and behaviors
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, and policies related to student safety
  • General knowledge of child guidance and motivational principles for students with special education needs
  • Knowledge of District special education processes and bus transportation protocols for students
  • Ability to observe health and safety regulations
  • Ability to understand and relate to students with disabilities
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to implement required intervention processes
  • Ability to assess issues and provide solutions
