About This Role

Coordinate the procurement and distribution of feline and canine blood products by managing donor programs, inventory, and logistics for the BluePearl National Blood Bank.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit and elevate blood donor programs through educational awareness, community involvement, social media, and rDVM relationships.
  • Assist with all phases of blood bank operations, from donor registration and screening to phlebotomy, supply, quality, and availability of blood products.
  • Monitor blood product supplies and inventory daily, facilitating requests and transferring or shipping blood products based on availability and expiration.
  • Perform accurate medical screening of donors, with veterinarian oversight, to determine eligibility.
  • Maintain all pertinent donor medical records and consent forms.
  • Coordinate and schedule donations based on hospital needs and donor availability.
  • Utilize knowledge to obtain a TPR, perform calculations, administer, and monitor sedation during blood collection, if needed.
  • Perform venipuncture on canines and felines to collect blood for testing, donations, and/or intravenous access.
  • Document collection and sedation information in medical records and inventory tracking sheets.
  • Clean and maintain blood bank equipment and supplies.
  • Conduct quality control measures of blood product to align with best practices.
  • Collaborate with the training team on educational opportunities related to blood product management and use.
  • Work with the financial coordinator to ensure blood products are being invoiced appropriately.
  • Update the National Blood Bank on the progress of the blood bank program consistently.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • 2+ years of experience in a veterinary hospital role
  • Advanced training in blood banking or transfusion medicine
  • Credentialed veterinary nurse or equivalent in state with prior knowledge of transfusion medicine
  • Critical thinking skills and decisive judgment
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, prioritization of work, and problem-solving skills
  • In-depth skills and knowledge of specialized concepts, practices, and procedures in the area of specialization

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required, undergraduate degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in a veterinary hospital role required.
