This Bioinformatician role supports a federal government customer by developing and validating bioinformatics tools and pipelines, specifically working with a Web Software Developer on the MicrobeTrace tool. The position involves both bioinformatics expertise and software development skills to enhance cluster detection and characterization methods.
Responsibilities
- Develop and evaluate synthetic epidemiologic and molecular sequence datasets that will mimic real-world data, used for validation of various analytical tools, pipelines, and data systems
- Contribute to software development efforts using JavaScript, TypeScript, and Angular
- Maintain regular communication with the customer, provide weekly updates on tasks, and provide demonstrations at team meetings, individual meetings, ZenHub, emails, and reports
- Present findings and/or provide MicrobeTrace demonstrations at conferences, workshops, meetings, and in publications
- Train coworkers, collaborators, and state and federal partners to use new tools/platforms
- Provide support to the Web Software Developer to integrate new bioinformatics tools and platforms; optimize existing visualizations; add new functionalities in MicrobeTrace for network and phylogenetic analyses; develop and deploy web-based MicrobeTrace for increased cluster detection efficiency; support methods to automate testing of MicrobeTrace using available open-source tools; manage development progress using project management tools; and enhance real-time response capabilities and prevention by integrating and visualizing data with increased efficiency and improved user access
Requirements
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in bioinformatics
- Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Microbiology, Biology, or closely related field
- Experience developing and evaluating synthetic epidemiologic and molecular sequence datasets that mimic real world data to validate various analytical tools, pipelines, and data systems
- Experience presenting findings and/or technical demonstrations at conferences, workshops, meetings, and in publications
- Demonstrated proactive approaches to troubleshooting issues and problem solving with strong analytical decision-making capabilities
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
- Attention to detail and ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to pass required Federal background screening, obtain and maintain government clearance
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Microbiology, Biology, or closely related field
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in bioinformatics.
Nice to Have
- Experience in software development using JavaScript, TypeScript and Angular
- Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and platforms
- Experience integrating and visualizing data
- Prior experience supporting CDC or similar US government client
