Administer and direct divisions within the fire department, commanding emergency activities during assigned shifts while managing personnel, operations, and budget in a volunteer/stipend capacity.
Responsibilities
- Administer directions to different divisions within the fire department
- Command authority and responsibility for all emergency activity during assigned shifts
- Manage a wide variety of emergency and non-emergency operations including firefighting, fire suppression, fire inspection, fire and environmental safety, disaster preparedness, emergency medical services, rescue and salvage operations, and personnel training and safety
- Supervise special assignments such as testing and repairing fire hydrants, conducting fire prevention inspections, and community risk reduction activities
- Administer overall operations of all fire personnel and fire station; provide command at significant emergency incidents
- Ensure the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards of fire management programs and systems; monitor and propose improvements
- Supervise and evaluate the work performance of personnel; provide staff training and development programs; counsel to correct deficiencies and administer discipline
- Participate in the administration and development of the department's annual budget
- Prepare a variety of written reports; research, analyze and evaluate department services and programs and develop recommendations
- Maintain and update training and certification records for all department personnel
Requirements
- Minimum 21 years old at time of appointment
- 3 years of experience as a fire captain with a recognized California fire department
- Major course work in fire science, emergency management, business administration, public administration, or a related field
- Possess and maintain a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate or equivalent
- Possess and maintain a valid National Registry and/or California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License
- Possession of a valid Class A or B California Commercial Driver’s License or Class C California Driver's License with Firefighter endorsement
Qualifications
- Major course work in fire science, emergency management, business administration, public administration, or a related field
- 3 years of experience as a fire captain with a recognized California fire department
