About This Role

The Assistant Habilitation Specialist assists with the operation of the classroom, ensuring all unit activities support social responsibility, independence, dignity, and continued growth for participants. This role involves implementing goals to maximize participant independence and providing direct support including activities of daily living.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all unit activities enhance and support each person’s social responsibility, independence, dignity, and continued growth.
  • Implement goals designed to maximize each participant’s level of independence as determined by the IDT.
  • Provide training and assistance in activities of daily living, including shaving, toileting, hand washing, and tooth brushing.
  • Monitor participants’ progress by collecting and documenting performance data.
  • Serve as a positive role model for participants in various program and community settings.
  • Provide behavioral interventions following least restrictive OPWDD approved techniques.
  • Successfully complete and perform all techniques required in AMAP, SCIP, CPR, and First Aid.
  • Implement the established activity schedule for each consumer.
  • Complete all required paperwork in the absence of the Habilitation Specialist with direct support from the Supervising Habilitation Specialist.
  • Display proficiency while entering person served data documentation in the electronic data system.
  • Ensure the unit is clean, safe, stimulating, and appropriately decorated.
  • Supervise participant’s lunch periods, including assisting with feeding and opening containers.
  • Participate in various appointments (medical, psychiatric, etc.) for assigned participants as required.
  • Physically interact with program individuals and negotiate the environment independently, including assisting in all SCIP interventions, emergency CPR, AMAP, and/or first aid techniques and fire drills.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Valid NYS driver’s license
  • Ability to complete AMAP, SCIP, CPR, and First Aid training and perform techniques

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Experience working with people with developmental disabilities preferred.
