Utility Locator

About This Role

This position performs difficult, skilled technical work utilizing specialized equipment and techniques to identify and mark the location of underground utilities such as water, sewer, fiber, natural gas, and electric.

Responsibilities

• Operate a variety of specialized equipment with a high level of efficiency to accurately and promptly locate utilities
• Maintain accurate records of time and materials
• Prepare reports and diagrams for line-location work, documenting key details of each work order
• Provide accurate and timely reports for submission to engineering to support precise updates to key maps
• Communicate results of line locations to customers, contractors, and coworkers
• Ensure trucks, tools, and equipment are kept clean, well-maintained, and fully stocked
• Provide support to other departmental employees as needed

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Three years of experience in field operations of an electric, natural gas, or public works utility
• Driver's license valid in the State of Florida
• Ability to obtain an approved Locator Certification within one year
• Comprehensive knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, and methods used in locating underground utilities
• Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards, standard safety practices, safe work methods, and safety devices relevant to utility operations
• Thorough knowledge of the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) standards

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Three years of experience in field operations of an electric, natural gas, or public works utility

Nice to Have

• Experience operating semi-advanced electronic, computer-based locating equipment
