About This Role

The Health Unit Coordinator facilitates daily unit operations by performing receptionist activities and clerical duties to coordinate patient care. This role provides customer service, organizes patient medical records, and ensures accurate data entry while maintaining a safe therapeutic environment and supporting a positive patient and physician experience.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate daily unit operations by performing receptionist activities and clerical duties to coordinate patient care
  • Provide prompt customer service and act as a resource for patients, families, staff, and physicians
  • Initiate discharge folders, patient portal information, and patient information code card upon admission
  • Coordinate patients’ daily schedule including tests, exams, procedures, and appointments
  • Maintain and organize patient medical records, perform 24-hour chart checks, and ensure orders are not missed
  • Utilize the electronic medical record for data entry and monitoring accuracy
  • Monitor Service Provider Workspace hourly to ensure stat physician orders and unacknowledged orders are communicated to nursing staff
  • Receive and record emergent verbal and telephone orders from medical staff for diagnostic tests and nutrition services
  • Proficiently utilize office equipment including phone, computer, fax, Vocera, printers, copier, and scanner
  • Complete requisition forms for clerical, office, dietary, and medical supplies to maintain adequate levels

Requirements

  • Familiarity with computers, office equipment, and medical terminology
  • Strong customer service skills with ability to anticipate and respond to clinical staff needs
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals and defuse situations
  • Demonstrates critical thinking, creative problem solving, organizational skills, and priority setting

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a healthcare or customer service setting preferred

Nice to Have

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Higher level of education
  • A minimum of 1 year of work experience
  • NAHUC certification desirable
  • Successful completion of medical terminology course preferred

BLS certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross (Required)
