Transit Driver

About This Role

The Transit Driver is responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of passengers by operating a van or bus over a scheduled route. This role involves maintaining vehicle cleanliness, conducting daily inspections, keeping accurate trip records, assisting passengers, and communicating via radio, supporting human service organizations, work, and medical facilities.

Responsibilities

• Operate vehicles for the safe and orderly transportation of passengers to and from their destination
• Complete daily walk-around inspections of vehicles and report repair needs/problems
• Fuel and maintain interior and exterior cleanliness of the vehicle, including checking fluid levels
• Maintain accurate daily trip records and provide necessary data for accounting system, including receiving and accounting for fares
• Assist passengers as required, ensuring they wear seat belts and follow safety regulations
• Communicate regularly by radio with the dispatcher, reporting service disruptions and observing FCC procedures and radio courtesy
• Use sound judgment in following dispatch instructions, recognizing, creating, and following logical sequences for passenger pickup and drop-off
• Observe all traffic laws, especially those related to public transportation
• Attend and successfully complete required training classes, including CPR, first aid, substance abuse awareness, special needs assistance techniques, and driving skills
• Assist with emergency operations and emergency evacuations as required

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license
• Good driving record with ability to obtain CDL
• Meet requirements of MA-2910 and MA-3550 for Non-Emergency Transportation as outlined in the NC Medicaid Manual
• No more than two chargeable accidents or moving violations in the past three years
• No driver’s license suspension or revocation within the past five years
• Satisfy criminal background check requirements
