Substitute Teacher Assistant, Early Childhood Education

About This Role

Support early childhood education teachers by assisting with play-based curriculum activities, caregiving functions, and classroom management for children aged 3 months to 5 years, fostering a positive learning atmosphere.

Responsibilities

• Provide caregiving functions including diapering, napping, feeding, and nurturing
• Assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment for children
• Help organize, set up, supervise, and clean up curriculum activities
• Engage in intentional interactions with children in teaching and learning
• Observe and interact with children individually, sharing observations with staff
• Provide feedback to teachers to support individual needs of children
• Provide input to teachers for parent/teacher conferences
• Use respectful language and positive guidance for children's behavior
• Participate in classroom management to maintain a positive learning atmosphere
• Support implementation of NAEYC and PITC philosophies in all rooms

Requirements

• Minimum of 6 or more units in Early Childhood Education (ECE)
• Knowledge of developmental needs and appropriate learning experiences for children 3 months to 5 years
• Familiarity with child development theory and practice
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand and walk up to 4 hours per day, and to work at child's level
• Demonstrated ability to perform basic computer use (keyboard, mouse, simple data entry, email, internet search, Microsoft Office Suite)
• Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities
• Ability to work with a variety of clientele using patience, tact, sensitivity and diplomacy
• Fingerprint clearance through the Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing Division
• Proof of current negative TB clearance, up-to-date MMR vaccination, and health screening clearance
• Compliance with State of California or UC Berkeley health requirements for positions working with young children
• Completion of blood borne pathogen training
• Completion of State of CA Mandated Reporter training
• Current Pediatric CPR/First Aid certification or obtained within 3 months of hire

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED minimum educational requirement and/or equivalent experience/training, with 6 or more units in Early Childhood Education (ECE)

Nice to Have

• 12 or more ECE units
