About This Role

The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Technician provides a variety of technical functions in the decontamination and sterilization of surgical instruments and other medical supplies in compliance with hospital policies and industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assure decontamination of instrumentation in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and AAMI standards
  • Decontaminate, sort, package, and sterilize instrumentation and equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations
  • Assemble and test instrumentation to ensure proper functioning prior to sterilization
  • Determine when repair/replacement of instrumentation is needed
  • Provide appropriate sterilization indicators in packaging and document parameters and outcomes of the sterilization process
  • Coordinate decontamination process to ensure adequate instrument availability for cases
  • Process contaminated scopes according to manufacturer’s recommendations and departmental guidelines
  • Operate autoclaves, Steris, and washer sterilizers to provide timely availability of instruments and equipment
  • Maintain records of all sterilizers, biological and chemical monitoring of steam, and Steris sterilizers
  • Maintain Bowie Dick, biological and chemical monitoring of sterilization in accordance with established policy

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited CS/SPD Technician course OR one (1) year of sterile processing experience in a centralized department or surgical instrument room
  • Basic working knowledge of computers
  • Able to comprehend written and verbal instructions

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited CS/SPD Technician course OR one year of sterile processing experience in a centralized department or surgical instrument room.

Nice to Have

  • Three years sterile processing experience in a centralized department or surgical instrument room
  • National certification as CSPD Technician from CBSPD or certification as a CRCST from IAHCSMM
