Sales and Marketing Intern

About This Role

This internship, offered in two tracks (Retail Outreach & Events or Retail Operations), supports the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation's Yard Opportunity Shop and Yard Work Gallery. Interns will gain hands-on experience in retail, marketing, sales, and community engagement, contributing to a mission-driven environment that fosters minority and women-owned business growth.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with entrepreneurs on outreach and promotional strategies (Retail Outreach & Events)
• Assist with event logistics, including setup, breakdown, and guest flow (Retail Outreach & Events)
• Document programs and events through photos, video, and post-event summaries (Retail Outreach & Events)
• Support point-of-sale and daily retail operations, including sales transactions, opening, and closing procedures (Both roles)
• Monitor inventory levels using internal tracking systems (Retail Operations)
• Research, test, and document merchandising strategies (Retail Operations)
• Support customers with questions related to gallery items (Retail Operations)
• Analyze daily and weekly sales data to identify best-selling products and performance trends (Retail Operations)
• Participate in scheduled professional development activities (Both roles)
• Schedule informational interviews with BNYDC staff to learn about career paths (Both roles)

Requirements

• Must be at least a college junior
• Strong interest in retail operations, customer experience, small business support, entrepreneurship, and/or community-based programming
• Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
• Ability to observe, document, and synthesize quantitative and qualitative feedback
• Basic data literacy and comfort with spreadsheets
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and willingness to learn
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel)
• Ability to stand for extended periods and perform light physical tasks (bending, packing, lifting light-to-moderate materials)
• Ability to work scheduled shifts, including some weekends and evenings as required

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled at an accredited college with interest in business, marketing, retail management, hospitality, entrepreneurship, or a related field
• 1-2 years of combined work, internship, and/or volunteer experience in a related field
