This role involves maintaining robotic workcells, repairing components, managing 3D printing operations, and ensuring the lab remains organized and stocked. The technician will support robot operations by keeping hardware in optimal condition and contributing to lab efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Replace or repair common wear/break items on robot hardware and verify systems are ready to run
- Route and secure workcell cabling, build new power and signal cables, and perform basic cable replacements
- Build conveyors, brackets, fixtures, workbenches, and parts cabinets
- Maintain 3D printers, run print jobs, and ensure printed parts meet quality requirements
- Manage inventory of spares, tools, and consumables, track stock levels, and proactively reorder
- Maintain a clean, organized lab/workcell environment and drive continuous improvement
- Assist in building new systems to spec, including mechanical assembly, mounting, and basic setup
- Follow and improve SOPs for parts, usage logging, BOMs/configs, and tracking repairs/maintenance
- Assist with safety procedures, checklists, risk assessments, and keeping safety equipment current
- Help manage deliveries, returns, and vendor interactions for tools/parts/equipment
Requirements
- Comfortable using basic hand tools (drills, drivers, hex keys, calipers) and following detailed build/repair instructions
- Comfortable using basic electrical tools (DMM, crimpers, ferrules, terminal blocks) and wiring connectors and components
- Organized and detail-oriented: can maintain inventory systems, keep documentation accurate, and execute repeatable processes
- Ability to lift/move lab items and work around equipment safely (standing, bending, reaching; frequent lifting of ~30–40 lbs)
- Clear written communication for logging work, documenting repairs, and escalating issues
- 3D printing experience (FDM preferred): calibration, material handling, print troubleshooting
Qualifications
- 1+ year experience in a hands-on technical role (lab tech, robotics/automation tech, maker space, manufacturing/assembly, hardware support, or similar) or strong demonstrable hands-on projects.
Nice to Have
- Experience in robotics labs, automation cells, or R&D environments, comfort working around industrial robots
- Comfortable following electrical safety procedures (de-energize/verify, safe routing, LOTO)
- Experience creating SOPs, checklists, or maintenance logs
- Familiarity with basic cabling (strain relief, cable management best practices)
- Basic CAD skills (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Onshape, etc.) and design-for-3D-print understanding
