About This Role

This role is for a Regional Recess Coach who will provide enriching recess experiences for children, promoting physical activity and learning. The coach will lead age-appropriate games and activities for pre-K to middle school students in various Queens neighborhoods.

Responsibilities

  • Commit to a weekly schedule of recess at assigned schools located in Queens
  • Be available for day-of communications via text/phone for immediate subbing needs and shift coverages
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills to respond quickly to scheduling team
  • Travel within two boroughs each day to support different programs and lead sports/fitness activities
  • Organize and lead structured games, sports, and active play opportunities during recess periods
  • Work effectively with co-coach(es) to run recess periods for groups of 40-80 children
  • Adapt games and sports to meet varying age groups, skill levels, spaces, and weather conditions
  • Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play in all activities
  • Build positive relationships with students, serving as a supportive and encouraging role model
  • Actively supervise students during all recess periods to ensure safety and positive interactions

Requirements

  • Experience coaching or teaching groups of elementary and/or middle school children
  • Possess at least two years of prior coaching or teaching experience in summer camps, recess, PE, or after school
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to relate to younger children
  • Ability to work with different age groups and partner with school staff
  • Available to work Monday - Friday during recess hours (10am-2pm)
  • Able to reliably commute to multiple locations across NYC and be flexible with schedule changes
  • Up-to-date physical and tuberculosis test documentation (required before starting)
  • Ability to pass Federal and NY State background checks and complete Department of Education fingerprinting

Qualifications

  • At least two years of prior coaching or teaching experience in summer camps, recess, PE, or after school.

  • AED certification
