About This Role

This role is responsible for managing digital and physical evidence for the Department of Public Safety, including collection, storage, transportation, and disposition. The technician will protect evidence integrity, ensure compliance with laws, and handle requests for digital evidence.

Responsibilities

  • Process requests from MNAA Legal department for body worn and in-car video, preparing and maintaining confidential and evidentiary documents, CDs, DVDs, storage or hard drives, photographs, and other evidence, and coordinating transfer of digital evidence.
  • Collect, receive, document, categorize, review, and verify a wide variety of property and evidence, including hazardous materials and firearms, determining and arranging transportation for analysis or storage while maintaining chain-of-custody.
  • Receive requests from the public and outside agencies, providing information on procedures for obtaining property and evidence and laws governing release.
  • Perform research, determine ownership, and authorize release or destruction of evidence in compliance with policies and State laws, including hazardous materials.
  • Maintain a variety of records regarding the receipt, storage, release, and destruction of property and evidence.
  • Assist in multimedia evidence audits to ensure compliance with applicable laws, policies, and CALEA standards.
  • Ensure monthly video reviews/logs and daily test video review logs/reports are completed by shift Lieutenants for CALEA compliance.
  • Assist with audits of property and evidence room, verifying location, and arrange/participate in narcotic, guns, and money audits.
  • Review and document proper usage/function of recruit body worn cameras during training.
  • Redact bodycam and in-car camera videos as required by policy prior to release.
  • Maintain physical and digital records and storage systems in an organized manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of sensitive information obtained or reviewed.
  • Maintain legal custody and control of the property and evidence room card access, move/shift property to maintain storage levels, and requisition materials.
  • Use safety precautions and follow procedures for handling firearms, weapons, chemicals, blood, DNA, narcotics, valuable items, and illicit materials to prevent injury, avoid contamination, and assure chain-of-custody.
  • Work with sworn personnel to facilitate victim viewings of property and evidence, ensuring safekeeping and chain-of-custody.
  • Testify in court regarding handling and chain-of-custody of evidence.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, MNAA employees, other agency representatives, and the public using good customer service principles.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma

Nice to Have

  • Associate's degree in a related field of study
  • Less than 2 years clerical or administrative experience, preferably in a law enforcement setting
