The position requires conducting feasibility studies, supporting testing, and mentoring less experienced engineers within the Shelby team.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical aspects of complex new electronic controllers, including component placement, attachment, and module packaging to meet customer specifications and manufacturability.
  • Design and develop mechanical layouts for Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs), including component placement constraints and mounting hardware.
  • Consider design requirements for environment, operation conditions, reliability, and durability in physical design.
  • Determine technical objectives and develop innovative, practical solutions for technical engineering problems.
  • Design for EMI/EMC shielding using gaskets, coatings, and specialized enclosure geometry to minimize electromagnetic interference.
  • Support Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to validate designs against severe shock and vibration profiles (DO-160 or MIL-STD-810 or equivalent).
  • Support Thermal Analysis to manage heat dissipation through conduction, convection, and radiation in both active and passively cooled systems.
  • Assist test engineering, quality, and manufacturing in building, installing, debugging, and testing designed equipment to ensure production capabilities.
  • Design and conduct development testing with Test Engineers, assisting with interpretation of results and report writing.
  • Provide engineering design, field maintenance support, and guidance for manufacturing, quality, and supply chain organizations.
  • Plan and coordinate the maintenance of assigned designs, including documentation, reporting, publishing, and presentations.
  • Provide technical support to failure investigations and bid responses, taking a technical leadership role when requested.
  • Assess any non-conforming product for engineering disposition as part of the MRB process.
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering best practices documentation and training.

  • Experience with ruggedizing and integrating electronic components, printed circuit boards, wiring harnesses, cables, and connectors.
  • Experience with designing and testing to meet requirements for thermal management, EMI/EMC, corrosion protection, manufacturability, and human factors.
  • Familiarity with DO-160 environmental testing requirements and designing products to meet or exceed these requirements.
  • Ability to take long-term engineering design and verification goals and break them down to manageable, near-term actions.
  • Expert ability in 3D modeling and design (Siemens NX)
  • Layout and drawing creation per ASME Y14.5 (Siemens NX)
  • General understanding of aluminum alloys, composites, polymers, and thermal interface materials (Materials Science)

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • 10+ years of experience

Nice to Have

  • Commercial or military aerospace experience.
