About This Role

Join a team at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory to conduct basic and applied research, developing and characterizing new material systems with multifunctional capabilities relevant to the Navy and DoD. This role involves advancing material system designs through a combination of structural properties and functional capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic and applied research to develop and characterize new material systems with multifunctional capabilities
  • Employ mechanics, materials science, engineering science, physics, chemistry, and biology to advance material system designs
  • Achieve multiple functions through judicious combinations of structural properties and functional capabilities
  • Extend and enhance system-level performance
  • Participate in ongoing research and develop new research directions

Requirements

  • Experience in mechanical-materials design and testing at multiple scales (nano-macro) and/or multiple physics (structural + thermal, electrochemical, etc.)
  • Experience with techniques including stress-strain analysis, mechanical testing (tensile, bending, fatigue/fracture, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis), materials characterization of meso-/micro-structure, SEM
  • Experience in modeling and/or characterization of mechanical behavior of materials and microstructure/defect-property interactions in metals, ceramics (UHTCs), polymers/elastomers, and composites
  • Experience with Spray deposition (thermal/cold-spray) and other Additive Manufacturing techniques
  • Experience with flow characterization over changing boundary conditions
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident

Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Materials Science and Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering
