Enforce County ordinances and state/federal laws, protecting individuals, their rights, and property. This role involves responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, investigating crimes, and maintaining public safety.
Responsibilities
- Enforce County ordinances and state and federal laws, serving and protecting individuals, their rights, and property
- Safely operate department vehicles while patrolling roads, highways, and other public/private areas in Calumet County
- Investigate and respond to suspicious or unlawful activities
- Issue traffic and ordinance citations
- Promptly respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service and complaints, assessing and bringing situations under control
- Direct and control traffic; provide assistance and escorts at special events; maintain security in courtrooms and designated public buildings
- Pursue, apprehend, search, and arrest suspects using necessary physical force
- Maintain security of persons in custody, prevent injury, and transport suspects to County jail
- Respond to and investigate traffic crashes, including assessing injuries, administering first aid/CPR, documenting scenes, and taking statements
- Participate in formal crime investigations, including searching crime scenes, collecting evidence, and interviewing suspects, witnesses, and victims
- Conduct legal searches of persons and property with and without a warrant
- Serve various legal documents, including warrants, subpoenas, summonses, and court orders
- Testify in court to present evidence, as required
- Maintain records and prepare detailed incident, investigation, activity, and other reports
- Attend prescribed in-service and/or training programs for certification in specialized law enforcement areas
Requirements
- Comprehensive knowledge of state and County laws and departmental policies and procedures
- Good knowledge of modern law enforcement principals, procedures, techniques and equipment
- Skill in the use of firearms and other protective equipment
- Ability to render first aid
- Knowledge of highway classification and of the various makes and types of motor vehicles
- Ability to learn the geography of the County
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other employees, County officials and officers, and the general public
