Patient Service Technician (Phlebotomist)

About This Role

This role involves collecting blood specimens from various patient types, verifying test criteria, and managing specimen transport. The technician will also perform legal blood draws and breath alcohol testing while utilizing computer skills, medical terminology, and strong interpersonal communication.

Responsibilities

• Verbally report critical test results
• Request additional information for completion of testing
• Investigate new/unusual test requests
• Collect blood specimens from inpatients, outpatients, nursing home, and home-bound patients
• Verify that patients meet test preparation criteria
• Instruct patients in the collection and handling of non-blood specimens
• Sort and transport specimens, requests, mail, and results to appropriate locations
• Perform legal blood draws, urine drug collections, and breath alcohol testing
• Administer glucose-test beverage to patients on order of physician
• Utilize computer and clerical skills to perform tasks
• Utilize knowledge of medical terminology and ICD-10 coding as used in the lab
• Utilize excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact with patients and visitors

Requirements

• Graduate of a medical assistant school or 6 months to 1 year phlebotomy training and specimen collection experience
• Prior phlebotomy training and specimen collection experience
• BLS certification required or obtained within 1 month of hire
• Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license
