ParaEducator: Special Education

About This Role

This ParaEducator role supports special education teachers by assisting students with disabilities in their instructional and physical needs, implementing individualized plans, and supporting differentiated instruction to promote student achievement and well-being.

Responsibilities

• Implement instructional plans and activities as designated by teacher or service provider, including task demonstration and reinforcement engagement
• Employ motivational techniques and strategies, implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), and redirect students while monitoring learning behaviors
• Assist in formulating and conducting classroom activities, including preparing materials and setting up equipment
• Assist and guide students as they transition throughout school buildings and community-based instruction
• Comply with medical protocols, including feeding/swallowing and appropriate response to medically-based events
• Provide instructional guidance on independent manipulation of outdoor attire, shoes, personal grooming, and self-help
• Adjust braces, walkers, and/or wheelchairs as needed, assisting non-ambulatory students and those with disabilities who require personal care support
• Perform various administrative tasks such as collating, supporting instructional modifications, correcting work samples, and maintaining files and records

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate
• 48 college credit hours OR passing of the ParaPro exam
• One (1) year experience working with children in an educational setting
• Ability to work collaboratively/professionally with teachers/service providers
• Ability to assist students with disability limitations (lifting, pushing, moving wheelchairs, feeding, aiding in bodily functions/hygiene)
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Proficiency with business software (Microsoft Office Suite)

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required; 48 college credit hours or passing of the ParaPro exam required. Associate's Degree in Special Education or related field preferred.
• One (1) year experience working with children in an educational setting required.
