Lead and support paleontological surveys, excavations, and analysis for infrastructure and environmental projects, ensuring regulatory compliance and thoughtful integration of paleontological resources into project planning.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive paleontological surveys and excavations at project sites to identify, document, and preserve resources
- Analyze collected specimens and data to determine the significance of findings and their impact on project plans
- Prepare detailed reports on paleontological findings, including site assessments, excavation results, and preservation recommendations
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and environmental specialists to integrate paleontological considerations into project designs
- Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations regarding the protection of paleontological resources
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior paleontologists and interns
- Stay current with advancements in paleontology and related fields through continuous learning and professional development
Requirements
- Master's or Doctorate degree in Paleontology, Geology, or closely related field
- 5-7 years of experience in paleontological research (civil engineering or environmental consulting preferred)
- Proficiency in identifying and analyzing fossil specimens
- Proficiency in conducting field surveys
- Proficiency in using relevant software and tools for data analysis and reporting
- In-depth understanding of paleontological preservation laws and regulations
- Understanding of best practices for integrating paleontological considerations into engineering projects
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to think critically and solve complex problems
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Valid driver's license
Qualifications
- A Master's or Doctorate degree in Paleontology, Geology, or a closely related field
- A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in paleontological research, preferably within the context of civil engineering or environmental consulting
