Office of General Counsel Intern

About This Role

This internship in the Office of General Counsel provides law students with hands-on experience in legal research, drafting, and litigation support related to workers' compensation and insurance matters for the New York State Insurance Fund.

Responsibilities

• Assist with drafting motions and deposition preparation
• Support discovery processes
• Review ethics inquiries and administrative appeals
• Conduct legal research and writing
• Review and respond to FOIL requests
• Provide advice and legal guidance on agency initiatives and operational issues
• Support administrative appeals of workers’ compensation decisions
• Handle premium collection matters and related court actions
• Assist with contracts and procurement for goods and services
• Ensure compliance with N.Y. Public Officers Law and Ethics rules
• Support hearings at the Workers' Compensation Board and litigate claims
• Provide advice on labor relations, employee conduct, and reasonable accommodation requests
• Defend employers in third-party suits and assist with agency litigation matters

Requirements

• Completed two years of law school prior to summer 2026
• Minimum GPA of 3.0
• Ability to work full-time during the summer (37.50 hours/week)
• Ability to work part-time during 3L fall and spring semesters (5-15 hours/week)

Qualifications

• Completed two years of law school
