The Middle School Band Director/Teacher provides standards-based music instruction with an emphasis on instrumental performance, directs and manages the middle school band program, and supports student growth through instruction, rehearsal, performance, and program coordination.
Responsibilities
- Provide instruction aligned with district curriculum and Georgia Standards of Excellence in instrumental music
- Develop and deliver a balanced band program that includes instruction, rehearsal, and performance
- Differentiate instruction to meet individual student needs, including students with disabilities
- Assess and document student progress in musical skills and participation
- Select appropriate musical repertoire and instructional materials
- Plan, coordinate, and direct rehearsals and performances during and outside the instructional day
- Establish and enforce performance, academic, and eligibility requirements for participation
- Maintain a safe learning environment; conduct safety checks of instruments, equipment, and facilities
- Maintain accurate inventories of instruments, uniforms, equipment, and materials; oversee proper cleaning, storage, and basic care
- Prepare program budgets and cost estimates; monitor expenditures
- Coordinate fundraising activities and work collaboratively with the Band Booster Club
- Communicate effectively with students, families, staff, and administrators regarding program expectations and student progress
- Maintain accurate records related to attendance, grades, inventories, finances, and performances
- Participate in required professional learning and maintain professional competence
- Collaborate with colleagues and participate in faculty meetings and committees
- Maintain confidentiality of student and program information
Requirements
- Valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) certification in Music (P12) or eligibility
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Music Education or a related field
- Knowledge of instructional strategies and best practices in instrumental music education
- Ability to play and demonstrate musical instruments and conduct student ensembles
- Knowledge of student supervision, safety, and risk management during rehearsals and performances
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws (IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, O.C.G.A. Title 20)
- Ability to organize rehearsals, performances, schedules, and resources
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, staff, and community partners
- Ability to maintain professional judgment and ethical conduct under GaPSC Ethics Rule 505-6-.01
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Music Education or a related field
- Prior successful band directing and/or teaching experience in the appropriate grade level or content area preferred.
