About This Role

Mentors with Young Storytellers support young writers in elementary school to explore their creativity and imagination, guiding them through the storytelling process from ideation to a finished product in a 9-week in-person program.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a relationship with student writer(s) and guide them through the storytelling process
  • Encourage creative exploration, ask curious questions, facilitate activities, and transcribe student ideas
  • Commit to a 9-week in-person program with weekly 1-hour writing sessions plus a 2.5-hour live performance
  • Support, facilitate, and manage a small group of student writers within a classroom setting
  • Meet with a lead volunteer (Head Mentor) prior to the program start date (~30 min. commitment)
  • Maintain weekly communication with the Head Mentor via email and check in on session days (~5-10 min. commitment)
  • Model the YS values of belonging, exploration, connection, and play, as well as the YS Worldview

Requirements

  • Commitment to a 9-week in-person program
  • Ability to work with small groups of student writers

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with young people
  • Creative industry experience
