About This Role

This role involves assigning diagnosis and procedure codes to patient accounts, ensuring accurate and timely claims submission for reimbursement. The Medical Coder will handle coding for Rural Health Clinic, physician, and outpatient services.

Responsibilities

  • Complete Rural Health Clinic, physician, and outpatient coding functions utilizing approved system workflow applications for coding, abstracting, and financial billing
  • Achieve accurate, complete and consistent selection of principle and relevant secondary diagnosis and procedures
  • Identify complications/co-morbid conditions and verify discharge disposition codes
  • Query physicians for clarification of documentation as directed by Coding Guidelines, CPT Assistant and facility specific guidelines
  • Respond to queries from Billing and Patient Financial Services teams within departmental guidelines
  • Follow American Hospital Association (AHA) Coding Guidelines and other regulatory agency directives for ICD, CPT, and HCPCS II coding
  • Maintain current knowledge of coding issues by reading official coding guidelines (AHA Coding Clinic, AMA CPT Assistant, WPS and CMS medical necessity regulations)
  • Meet productivity and accuracy requirements consistently per HIM policy
  • Maintain professional certification as mandated by professional organizations (AHIMA, AAPC)
  • Assist HIM management in orientation and training of new staff and contract coders, and serve as a resource and subject matter expert

Requirements

  • High school degree or equivalent
  • Maintains professional certification as mandated by professional organizations (AHIMA, AAPC)
  • Highly knowledgeable of clinical information such as disease process, pathology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, and procedural and surgical intervention
  • Knowledge of computerized encoder and abstracting systems as well as coding guidelines
  • Essential knowledge of ICD coding conventions, CPT coding conventions and DRG/APC encoder applications
  • Mastery of coding guidelines for sequencing and selection

Qualifications

  • High school degree or equivalent, Associate degree or equivalent in Heath Information Management preferred
  • 2 years of Rural Health Clinic coding experience preferred

Nice to Have

  • Associate degree or equivalent in Heath Information Management
  • 2 years of Rural Health Clinic coding experience
  • Working knowledge of CPSI
