Serve as a journeyman-level mechanic for mobile equipment, including vehicles, buses, and heavy equipment, ensuring their maintenance and repair for the North Clackamas School District.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose complex mechanical problems and determine necessary repair work using specialized testing and diagnostic equipment
- Set up and operate specialized power equipment for reconditioning engines, transmissions, and related components
- Conduct complete engine and vehicle tune-ups using computerized and mechanical equipment
- Maintain and change vehicle fluids and filter systems, including proper disposal procedures
- Replace and rebuild brakes and hydraulic systems; repair damaged frames, differentials, drive shafts, and steering mechanisms
- Repair and/or replace vehicle electrical components and troubleshoot electrical systems
- Perform required local, state, and federal vehicle inspections and safety checks
- Maintain equipment and tools, and conduct road tests to assure effectiveness and safety of repairs
- Cover bus routes and trips as assigned
- Supervise or direct helpers and other staff in performing mechanical work
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- Completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent within the specific trade/craft area
- Possession of an appropriate trade license valid in the state
- Training in First Aid (CPR and defibrillator training may be required)
- Ability to recognize and eliminate safety risks on equipment used to transport students and employees
- Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decision-making capabilities
- Knowledge of state and local codes related to assigned trade/craft
- Valid driver's license and safe driving record, able and willing to operate district owned vehicles
- Ability to obtain Class B Commercial Driver's License within six months
- Ability to obtain State School Bus Driver's Certificate and appropriate licensing endorsement within six months, including annual training
- Ability to obtain Oregon Department of Education school bus annual inspector certificate within one year
- Subject to random drug testing under Department of Transportation guidelines
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 2+ years of journeyman level experience in general vehicle/mobile equipment mechanic trades, or equivalent apprenticeship
Nice to Have
- Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License
- Bilingual and bicultural skills
- Experience in the maintenance and repair of large and small school buses, including gasoline and diesel
