About This Role

Operate large manual machines to manufacture precision parts from various materials by reading engineering drawings, performing accurate measurements, and ensuring quality standards. This role supports manufacturing tasks and maintains a safe, organized work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate manual machine tools (lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, etc.) to mill, drill, tap, turn, bore, slot, grind, and assemble precision parts
  • Select proper tools, speeds, and feeds based on material type and job specifications
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work orders to plan machining operations
  • Perform layout operations and mark reference points and dimensions on raw materials
  • Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, dial indicators, verniers, etc.) to ensure work meets specified tolerances
  • Conduct in-process and final inspections to verify part accuracy and quality
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance on machines to ensure optimal operation
  • Maintain accurate documentation and production records
  • Follow 5S principles to ensure a clean, safe, and organized work area
  • Operate overhead cranes and forklifts for material staging and handling

Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints
  • Proficient in using precision measuring tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, dial indicators)
  • Strong understanding of machining processes and tolerances

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Nice to Have

  • 5+ years of machining experience in a manufacturing or job shop environment
  • Prior work experience operating large, horizontal centering manual lathe
  • CNC horizontal lathe experience
  • Completion of a formal machinist apprenticeship or technical training program
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement tools (e.g., Kaizen, Lean, 5S)
  • Experience performing layout and setup for complex parts
