About This Role

Provide essential medical care and support to shelter animals as a Licensed Veterinary Technician. This role involves assisting with exams, performing treatments, surgery assistance, and maintaining medical records under the direction of a veterinarian.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical care and support to shelter animals under the direction of a veterinarian
  • Assist with physical examinations and handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments
  • Perform dental cleanings and extractions under veterinarian supervision, including dental X-rays
  • Administer treatments, perform wound care, and prepare animals for surgery
  • Assist the veterinarian with procedures and surgery, including intubating and monitoring patients under anesthesia
  • Perform euthanasia and obtain certification within one year of hire if not already certified
  • Perform routine lab procedures, collect samples (urine, blood, skin scrapings), place catheters, and administer fluids
  • Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies, and ensure drug logs comply with regulations
  • Train and oversee veterinary assistants and clinic volunteers
  • Maintain appropriate standard of care protocols and uphold policies and procedures of JAS leadership

Requirements

  • Current Washington Veterinary Technician license
  • 1 year of experience as a licensed Veterinary Technician
  • 3 years of experience in clinic or shelter medicine
  • Ability to obtain a valid Washington state driver’s license within 30 days of hire
  • Ability to obtain euthanasia certification within one year of hire
  • Ability to obtain a Veterinary Medical Clerk license within six months of hire
  • Mathematical knowledge for proper medication and fluid dosage
  • Ability to perform humane medical restraint techniques for multiple species
  • Knowledge and experience in Fear Free handling techniques

Qualifications

  • H.S. Diploma or G.E.D.
  • 1 year of experience as a licensed Veterinary Technician AND a minimum of 3 years of experience in clinic or shelter medicine

Nice to Have

  • 1 year of experience dealing with animals compassionately and respectfully
  • Experience in animal services, animal rescue, or animal sheltering
  • Training and knowledge in HQHVSN techniques and surgical flow (managing 25-30 animals per surgery day)
  • Training and knowledge in shelter medicine, infectious disease management, and herd health management
