About This Role

Provide essential technical support for Large Animal Clinic Ambulatory services, focusing on patient care for equines and other large farm animals. This role involves assisting world-leading faculty clinicians and technicians, and instructing veterinary students.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, handle, lead, lunge, and restrain patients, primarily equines, but also llamas, alpacas, and other large domestic farm animals
  • Lead horses for gait evaluation
  • Perform aseptic preparation for local nerve blocks or joint injections
  • Place IV catheters, collect samples, and perform diagnostic testing
  • Administer medical treatments and monitor patients
  • Maintain accurate medical records and document charges
  • Maintain supplies and equipment, restock service trucks, and clean/disinfect work areas
  • Instruct students on patient care and technical procedures
  • Implement infection control measures to protect patients and personnel

Requirements

  • Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or ability to obtain within 3 months
  • Experience handling, restraining, and working with horses and other livestock (healthy, sick, sedated, fractious) of all types and temperaments
  • Experience with medications, drugs, and fluids commonly used in horses and livestock and performing mathematical calculations for doses
  • Experience with equine and livestock husbandry, anatomy, behavior, and basic physiology to identify abnormal physical signs
  • Experience monitoring patient vital signs and administering PO, IV, SQ, and IM medications
  • Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to interact with diverse groups
  • Skill to recognize and handle difficult/unpleasant situations and individuals, using problem-solving skills to manage multiple projects

Nice to Have

  • Current CA Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license
  • Experience using Veterinary Medical & Administrative Computer System (VMACS)
  • Experience following VMTH patient care SOP's, safety and Infectious Disease Control protocols
  • Experience with all aspects of endoscopic procedures set up, use, sample collection, image capture, processing/disinfection
  • Experience providing treatments on patients with life-threatening illness or injury based on clinician's orders
  • Ability to provide technical assistance to clinician during life-threatening situations, including CPR on neonatal large animal patients
