About This Role

Assist judicial officers in an assigned courtroom by maintaining accurate records, controlling court calendars, and scheduling hearings. Act as a liaison between judicial officers, legal counsel, court staff, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Attend court sessions and maintain official record of court proceedings, taking rough minutes and administering oaths
  • Prepare, assemble, process, and maintain reports, logs, forms, and official documents generated from court proceedings
  • Enter a variety of data into computer systems to record court proceedings/actions and generate/update documents
  • Act as a liaison between judge, attorneys, agencies, and the public, answering inquiries and providing interpretation of court policies
  • Maintain assigned courtroom calendar, coordinating scheduling and setting/confirming dates
  • Track cases submitted to the court, monitoring filing dates and timelines, and obtaining appropriate records for the judge
  • Assist judge in the jury selection process, maintain jury records, and track jury-related expenses
  • Maintain control of and act as custodian of exhibits during trials/hearings, ensuring proper security and chain of custody
  • Review orders, filings, judgments, and other documents for accuracy and conformance, preparing and issuing legal documents as directed by the court
  • Manage the logistical functioning and flow of courtroom activities to ensure efficiency and professionalism

Requirements

  • Educational equivalent to a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • 1 year of experience as a Court Services Specialist I/II OR 3-4 years of administrative, clerical or secretarial experience, preferably dealing with legal or court processes.
  • Valid Class C California Driver's License
  • Knowledge of general clerical and record-keeping practices and procedures
  • Proficient in customer service and proper telephone etiquette
  • Knowledge of alphabetical, numerical and chronological filing sequences
  • Ability to type at a minimum rate of 35 net wpm

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Judicial Courtroom Assistant I: 1 year as a Court Services Specialist I/II OR 3 years of administrative, clerical or secretarial experience, preferably dealing with legal or court processes. Judicial Courtroom Assistant II: 1 year as a Judicial Courtroom Assistant I OR 3 years as a Court Services Specialist I/II OR 4 years of administrative, clerical or secretarial experience, preferably dealing with legal or court processes.
