Java Engineering Coach – Pair Programming & GitHub Copilot

About This Role

This role involves coaching a Java engineering team on adopting GitHub Copilot for pair programming. The coach will work hands-on with engineers to embed Copilot into real development workflows, establishing best practices for secure and efficient code delivery.

Responsibilities

• Pair program daily with engineers and run occasional mob sessions to deliver backlog items using Copilot
• Model the full Copilot-native workflow: clarify intent, set context, generate/draft, refine, validate with tests, and ship
• Improve Pull Request quality through smaller diffs, clearer intent, better naming, and fewer review cycles
• Define practical Copilot operating standards outlining acceptable, discouraged, and verifiable practices
• Teach repeatable Copilot workflows across IDE completions, Copilot Chat, and reliable prompt patterns
• Implement stop rules and guardrails for secure coding, sensitive data handling, and verification habits
• Create a team-ready library of Copilot prompts and examples grounded in the codebase for common tasks
• Build test acceleration workflows including unit, integration, and API tests with Copilot
• Enforce verification discipline for Copilot-generated tests, ensuring meaningful assertions and edge-case coverage
• Establish baselines and track measurable improvements like PR cycle time, review churn, and test quality

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience
• Strong Java skills (Spring Boot or similar preferred)
• Demonstrated experience pairing or coaching engineers in real delivery environments
• Hands-on experience using GitHub Copilot within a production codebase
• Strong fundamentals in refactoring, test design, debugging, code review, and engineering quality gates
• Comfortable operating with enterprise security and governance expectations
