Perform journey-level technical duties related to the installation, distribution, transmission, and maintenance of power systems for IF Power. This role involves line maintenance, new construction, and responding to emergency calls to assure against loss of electrical service.
Responsibilities
- Perform line maintenance work and new construction, including pole climbing and live line work as per approved safety procedures.
- Act as a troubleshooter or serviceman on a rotating schedule for electrical issues.
- Conduct general technical analysis of line functions to anticipate and prevent problems and recommend specifications for new construction.
- Install, erect, and set street lights, security lights, steel and wood light poles, and power poles for all City systems.
- Perform construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of circuits for overhead and underground power lines.
- Respond to calls from the public or division dispatch regarding emergency issues and concerns, performing necessary repair activities.
- Provide direct customer services related to account connects and disconnects, coordinating with electrical inspectors.
- Contribute to GIS operations by identifying changes in mapped elements related to electrical operations and generating maps.
- Operate line trucks, line working apparatus, and heavy equipment for connecting, installing, maintaining, and repairing power lines.
- Troubleshoot power distribution equipment, splice cables, repair, set, and terminate transformers, and conduct system tests.
Requirements
- Considerable knowledge of procedures for installation of high voltage power lines and equipment
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with high voltage
- Knowledge of equipment and tools required to effectively perform duties
- Knowledge of terminology and nomenclature of the electrical field
- Knowledge of operation of heavy duty power equipment
- Knowledge of construction and maintenance of power transmission and distribution
- Knowledge of modern methods, principles and practices of power transmission and distribution
- Knowledge of operation of meters, gages and instruments associated with electricity and electric power distribution
- Knowledge of metering equipment maintenance
- Knowledge of equipment and materials used in construction and maintenance operations
- Knowledge of current codes, standards, safety practices and principles involved in power utility operations
- Skill in installation of high voltage lines, wire, and equipment
- Skill in the operation of backhoe, wire pulling machine, boring machine, underground locator, and rigging equipment
- Ability to work independently in completing responsible tasks
- Ability to make procedural decisions accurately where error could occur in all weather conditions
- Ability to perform arduous physical labor
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with Supervisors, fellow employees, and the public
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
- Ability to operate radio communication equipment
- Must be available to work in an on-call basis outside of normal business hours.
- Must, within 6 months of hire, live within 25 miles of Idaho Falls Power Main Office.
Qualifications
- Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an ability or aptitude to perform duties, and successful completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship, plus passage of a certification test approved by I.B.E.W. and administered by the City of Idaho Falls; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
