The Mechanic supports shop operations by maintaining fuel systems, assisting with parts room operations, and performing general mechanical work on vehicles and equipment. This role is also responsible for maintenance of roadways and roadsides to ensure safety and good repair.
Responsibilities
- Perform inspections, maintenance, and repairs of roadway and roadside construction equipment, self-propelled equipment, and construction tools
- Repair equipment using cutting torch, electric welder, and gas welder; change and repair tires on equipment
- Operate and maintain fuel systems and associated systems; schedule and perform minor repairs to fuel and lubricant handling equipment
- Research and stay informed on oil ratings and new engine lubricant requirements; ensure proper fuel octane blends and cetane levels
- Transport equipment to project sites utilizing various trucks and trailers as required
- Maintain computerized inventory control system of parts, supplies, and materials; notify staff for reordering; assist in conducting inventory
- Receive, store, and distribute parts and supplies; pick-up parts from vendors; support parts room personnel by maintaining tire inventory
- Operate communications equipment between shop and field personnel; receive calls and relay information to authorities, supervisors, and field crews
- Utilize heavy equipment operation skills and maintenance knowledge for snow and ice control, including preparing and inspecting winter maintenance equipment
- Remove snow, apply sand/aggregate/de-icing chemicals, remove ice from culverts, and clean equipment after use
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience as a mechanic on modern heavy trucks and/or construction equipment
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
- Ability to obtain a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver's License without "L" (air brake) restriction and with "N" (tank vehicles) endorsement within six (6) months of hire
- Ability to obtain Forklift Operator Certification within three (3) months of hire
- Must furnish and maintain personal tool set at start of employment
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Five (5) years of training or paid, full-time work experience as a full performance level mechanic on modern heavy trucks and/or construction equipment.
Nice to Have
- Experience in the repair of diesel trucks, autos, pickups, heavy construction equipment, power equipment, and tools
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) or other truck technician certification
