Supervise a university groundskeeping crew, directing activities such as planting, pruning, mowing, and debris removal. Instruct groundskeepers on proper tool and equipment use, and assist the Grounds Manager in administration and management of landscape functions.
Responsibilities
- Supervise labor crews in grounds care activities including mowing, gardening, landscaping, trimming, and snow/ice removal
- Manage and approve employees daily time input, approve vacation, conduct annual performance evaluations, and initiate discipline measures
- Participate in grounds maintenance work, proficiently using all hand and power tools
- Operate heavy equipment including dozers, skid steers, forklifts, backhoes, tractors, mowers, and trucks
- Train all personnel on equipment operation and safety procedures
- Make on-the-spot decisions relative to grounds maintenance and safety
- Assign duties to subordinates, create schedules, and inspect their work daily
- Ensure user level maintenance is executed on all assigned equipment
- Conduct landscaping planning and confer with the Grounds Manager for implementation
- Work with outside contractors as needed
Requirements
- Ability to lead, train, and supervise up to eight groundkeeper personnel
- Mastery of equipment operation ranging from hand power tools to heavy equipment
- Ability to train personnel on equipment preventive maintenance procedures and safe operation
- Experience with methods, materials, and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and trimming trees, shrubs, plants, and grasses
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often in adverse weather conditions
- Ability to work at heights up to 65 feet
- Ability to bend, reach, stoop, and lift
- Personal cell phone
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- 5+ years of grounds/landscaping experience
Nice to Have
- Pesticide license
- Experience in the proper use, control, storage, and disposal of pesticides, fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and similar chemicals
