This role involves accurately accessioning and describing routine surgical specimens, preparing them for histological examination, and escalating complex cases to pathologists to ensure high-quality patient sample processing.
Responsibilities
- Assure appropriate specimen accessioning
- Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens without selective sampling
- Dictate macroscopic description for routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, including anatomic site, measurements, weight, count, color, and abnormal findings according to policies
- Prepare routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens for histology examinations
- Escalate non-routine or complex surgical specimens to the Pathologist Assistant or Pathologist
- Archive samples after analysis and respond to inquiries regarding specimens from internal and external departments
- Complete assignments with accuracy and in a timely manner without compromising patient sample quality
- Participate in training and ad-hoc projects as directed
- Exercise good judgement in recognizing and correcting irregularities and/or unusual requests
- Comply with all aspects of the job according to written procedure, including CAP, CLIA, state regulations, HIPAA, safety, and OSHA regulations
Requirements
- Associate’s degree in science or equivalent
- One (1) year of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
- Knowledge of medical terminology, specifically understanding of Pathology
- Excellent data entry, word processing, spelling, grammar and editing skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated technical knowledge and skill in laboratory
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible and work under changing conditions requiring reprioritization of workflow
- Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes
- Ability to use a high level of discretion and maintain all confidentiality
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in science or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science or equivalent, preferred.
- One (1) year of progressively responsible and directly related work experience. Technical experience in a gross laboratory preferred.
