General Technician Apprentice Below Ground

About This Role

This is an entry-level General Technician Apprentice position focused on installing, maintaining, and repairing gas mains and service lines below ground. The role involves operating heavy equipment, using hand tools, assisting with leak investigations, and performing landscape maintenance and traffic control.

Responsibilities

• Assist with distribution activities including installation, repair, and maintenance of the distribution system.
• Operate basic equipment and tools.
• Perform traffic control, landscaping, and general maintenance tasks.
• Dig, shore, repair leaks, test, and wrap pipes.
• Work with pressure recording devices and various hand and air tools.
• Ensure truck is stocked with equipment and supplies in an orderly condition.
• Efficiently complete customer and compliance orders according to company policies and operator qualifications.
• Observe all safety requirements and regulatory guidelines.
• Capture documentation in Mobile Data Terminal and recognize abnormal operating conditions.
• Assist in connecting and disconnecting gas service, and manually turning meters on and off.
• Assist in conducting investigations of high bill complaints and special meter readings.
• Assist in performing regular meter inspections, painting, and maintenance of gas systems.
• Respond to customer questions directly or via referral.
• Operate Automated Dispatch system to complete meter reads and turn-offs.
• Identify abnormal operating conditions and take appropriate actions.
• Perform simple sniff tests to detect gas leaks.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED
• Mechanical aptitude
• Basic knowledge and use of hand tools and equipment
• Ability to pass basic skills and knowledge assessments
• Valid Driver’s License
• Good written and oral communication
• Ability to use good judgment in potentially hazardous environments
• Basic MS Office and Computer skills
• Customer Service skills
• Able to operate basic equipment, machinery and simple tools
• Good interpersonal skills
• Ability to resolve difficult/escalated situations
• Knowledge of assigned geographical territory
• Ability to smell odorant used to detect gas leaks

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Entry level position, field operations experience is preferred.

Nice to Have

• Field operations experience including distribution crew work
