Operate and maintain dry kilns to ensure lumber is dried to correct moisture content and specifications, performing routine maintenance and adjusting controls as needed to produce top-quality lumber.
Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and monitor dry kilns to ensure lumber is dried to correct specifications
- Regularly check moisture levels in lumber to meet desired standards
- Perform routine maintenance on kilns to keep them running efficiently and address issues
- Adjust kiln’s temperature and humidity levels to optimize drying time and quality
- Maintain accurate logs of drying cycles, moisture content, and adjustments
- Inspect lumber before and after drying to ensure it meets company and industry standards
- Follow all safety protocols and ensure the kiln area is kept safe and clean
- Safely and efficiently operate a forklift to move lumber and materials
Requirements
- Attentiveness to detail
- Ability to monitor drying process closely and adjust as needed
- Comfortable working in a physically demanding environment
- Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy objects, and work in hot and humid conditions
Nice to Have
- Previous experience as a Dry Kiln Operator or in a similar role in a sawmill or wood products facility
- Good understanding of kiln operation and drying processes
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Experience operating forklifts, especially heavy-duty forklifts in a sawmill or industrial setting
