About This Role

The DOC Principal is responsible for the leadership, administration, and supervision of academic education programs within a correctional facility. This role oversees curriculum planning, staff management, and ensures compliance with TDOC policies and state education standards to support rehabilitation through education.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and supervise academic, vocational, special education, and library programs aligned with state standards.
  • Design new educational initiatives and training programs in response to evolving institutional priorities and reentry-focused rehabilitation goals.
  • Select, train, evaluate, and support teachers and staff, identifying professional development needs and ensuring compliance with TDOC policies.
  • Ensure institutional, departmental, and educational policies are implemented and followed, including student discipline, safety protocols, and special education compliance.
  • Develop, evaluate, and revise instructional programs, supporting effective classroom instruction and curriculum alignment to Tennessee Department of Education standards.
  • Oversee class schedules, graduation ceremonies, extracurricular programs, and assessments, ensuring timely reporting and documentation.
  • Assist in the preparation and oversight of the school budget, review procurement needs, and manage contracts and resources.
  • Supervise the collection and maintenance of student data, attendance, transcripts, and assessment results, ensuring compliance with documentation standards.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, shared accountability, and professional growth, leading efforts to evaluate and improve educational outcomes and staff performance.

Requirements

  • Possession of a master's degree in education, education administration or other related acceptable field from an accredited college or university OR Possession of a valid professional teaching certificate from the Tennessee Department of Education with appropriate administrator endorsements.
  • Certification or eligible for certification as an administrator with the State of Tennessee.
  • Ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Records screening, pre-employment drug screen, and criminal background check.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education, education administration or other related acceptable field, OR a valid professional teaching certificate from the Tennessee Department of Education with appropriate administrator endorsements.
