Detention Housing Operator

About This Role

Assist sworn staff within the Humboldt County Detention Center with clerical duties, communication, and monitoring, ensuring accurate record-keeping and effective facility operations.

Responsibilities

• Answer incoming phone calls and provide information to members of law enforcement, the court system, attorneys, and the public
• Log all Detention Center activity, including deputies and detainees, using computer systems
• Create, update, and maintain detainee files and computer-based profiles
• Initiate communication and share documents with the Courts, District Attorney’s Office, and law enforcement personnel
• Monitor inmates via video surveillance system for criminal activity, violent, or self-destructive behavior
• Verbally communicate with detainees through an intercom system addressing issues, questions, or problems
• Solicit and input required information from arrestees during the intake or booking process
• Accurately inventory and record arrestee personal property, including cash money
• Monitor door control panel and regulate access to interior doors for staff and detainees
• Complete reports and testify as a witness to criminal activity occurring within the detention center

Requirements

• Ability to pass a fingerprint-based background check
• Ability to pass a background investigation including a personal history statement and Voice Stress Analysis (VSA) examination
• Ability to work in a confined space
• Ability to deal directly with the public in a detention center environment and tolerate exposure to noise, obscenity, and hostility
• Willingness to work shift work

Qualifications

• One (1) year of experience performing routine administrative office clerical duties, preferably in law enforcement
