About This Role

This role is responsible for maintaining safety and security within a corrections facility, managing inmates, and ensuring compliance with behavioral expectations through direct supervision and strategic inmate management.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct safety and security inspections within housing units
  • Serve as the sole supervisory authority in the unit, making primary decisions concerning inmates and activities
  • Establish and maintain positive supervisory relationships with inmates, providing direction and coaching
  • Continuously interact with inmates throughout the shift, actively listening and responding to requests
  • Be familiar with all inmates under supervision, recognizing behavior patterns and changes
  • Identify and address problems among inmates in early stages through verbal and non-verbal cues
  • Motivate inmates to comply with facility rules and behavioral expectations through positive role modeling
  • Engage inmates in positive activities and encourage participation in jail programs
  • Work as part of a team with fellow housing-unit deputies and other staff, collaborating on inmate management issues
  • Respond to emergency situations

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Successfully complete approved corrections officers’ course within one year from date of hire
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers
  • Ability to remain calm during stressful situations
  • Effective interpersonal communication and interaction skills
  • Ability to use sound, independent judgment within policy and principles of Inmate Behavior Management and Direct Supervision
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and effective reports and written materials
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and files
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively within a team and larger organization
  • Basic understanding of technology and computer applications and software
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical endurance and agility under episodic adverse conditions

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
