Database IT Engineer III

About This Role

This role involves providing skilled technical services for database support within the Police Department's IT Division, focusing on installation, configuration, and ongoing support for City applications and infrastructure. The Database Administrator will manage critical database tasks, optimize performance, and contribute to the design and maintenance of the Data Warehouse.

Responsibilities

• Perform database support and troubleshooting tasks, including full development life-cycle support for database applications
• Monitor and tune production performance, create and define database files, and make capacity estimates for development and production systems
• Provide design, development, implementation, maintenance, and testing of database application systems
• Perform program performance troubleshooting and error debugging, including current and future storage allocation requirements
• Support staff in the use of database software products for business applications, queries, and reporting, including development of stored procedures, views, and functions
• Participate in an on-call rotation to resolve after-hours issues with database availability, patching, and storage management
• Administer Microsoft SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, and Power BI
• Maintain user and system security for data integrity, coordinating with department staff on requests and changes
• Assist in data architecture, standards, process design, and platform administration related to data management activities

Requirements

• Considerable (3-5 years) computer systems experience in at least one of the technical support areas
• Strong professional experience with Microsoft SQL Server
• Strong professional experience with Excel, data modeling, usability design, visualizations, unstructured information analysis, data warehousing, functional requirements analysis, and business analytics

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field, such as Engineering or Geography
• 3-5 years of computer systems experience in Applications, Database, Desktop, GIS, Network, Security, Server, or Web Support

Nice to Have

• Experience with Power BI, SQL Server Management Studio, Data Management tools, ETL tools (FME, SSIS)
• Well-rounded knowledge of IT concepts regarding networking, server, storage, firewall, application architecture patterns, monitoring, security, DR planning, and user authentication
• Intermediate to advanced skill level in coding SQL and data warehouse design and implementation
• Experience with Server management tools, DevOps, and administrative scripting with PowerShell
• Highly proficient in understanding business processes and performing business analysis
• Excellent customer service skills
• Experience developing and maintaining technical documentation
