About This Role

The Custodian 4 is a supervisory position at Tacoma Community College overseeing day-to-day evening and night shift custodial operations. This role involves maintaining the cleanliness and care of institutional facilities, providing a positive working and learning environment, and performing direct custodial duties.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, direct, instruct, train and mentor employees, ensuring compliance with rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Train other supervisors in supervisory techniques, new product, and equipment use.
  • Evaluate performance of crew supervisors and review their performance evaluations of crew members.
  • Perform routine inspections of assigned areas and evaluate employee work against standards, identifying training needs and counseling on job performance.
  • Operate a safety program, training supervisors in safety and maintaining a follow-up program on accidents and safety prevention techniques.
  • Meet with vendors to learn about new products, conduct product tests, and recommend purchases of equipment, supplies, and machinery.
  • Assist in maintaining budget control for labor and materials.
  • Establish location of collection points, collection schedules, records, and quality control for material recycling programs.
  • Schedule and assign work, inspect assigned areas, and ensure departmental cleanliness standards are met.
  • Instruct employees in proper cleaning techniques and safety practices and maintain compliance with policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • 2 years of supervisory experience in housekeeping, janitorial, or general building maintenance
  • Current, valid, unrestricted driver's license
  • Ability to move or relocate items up to 50 pounds
  • Ability/willingness to work at heights (including above 10 feet) and in confined spaces
  • Ability to perform repetitive functions such as reaching, bending, lifting, pulling, and kneeling
  • Ability to work effectively for extended periods during inclement weather
  • Ability to perform rooftop maintenance and cleaning of debris
  • Ability to assist grounds crew in clearing pathways, roadways, and stairways of snow, ice, etc.
  • Ability to work Sunday - Thursday, 6:00 pm - 2:30 am

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • 2 years of supervisory experience or directing the work of others in a housekeeping, janitorial, or general building maintenance environment.

  • Ability to work independently and simultaneously on multiple projects
